Performed
chronologically and recorded Live in Seattle’s Meany Theater Craig
Sheppard won the Silver Prize at the Leeds Piano competition in
the same year that Murray Perahia won the gold. He has had a successful
international career as a soloist, living in England for twenty years
and giving concerts around the world. He has made recordings for EMI,
ASV and other labels. He is presently Professor of Piano at Washington
UniversityThese recordings represent the seven concerts given by Craig
Sheppard at Seattle’s Meany Theater, from January 2003 through May
of 2004. The sonatas were performed chronologically, so as to trace Beethoven’s
growth from a compositional, a spiritual, and an intellectual perspective.
Written between the ages of twenty-five and fifty-two, these works have
long constituted one of the central canons of Western classical music.
Sheppard sees them as essential to an understanding of our own individual
transformations as we progress through life. In essence, Beethoven’s
struggle is a metaphor for not only our own individual journeys, but also
for the collective journey of an entire planet. |
